Why paterno was wrong

They have jurisdiction over the campus, which includes the Penn State football offices. When Paterno notified Schultz of what he had been told, he was notifying an appropriate authority.

If Paterno's intention was to conceal the allegations against Sandusky from authorities, why on earth would he discuss the matter with Schultz? What motivation would Paterno have for discussing the matter with Schultz -- otherwise a completely irrelevant figure in this matter -- apart than involving the police? The matter is not an irrelevant detail in this case, but seems to have been missed by outside observers and commentators.

I grew up in State College, Pa. Naturally, I am not an objective commentator on this matter. Frankly, I wanted Paterno to retire, on his own free will or not, long before the Sandusky scandal.

An year-old man should not be coaching a major college football program. The Penn State Board of Trustees rightly, in my opinion, apportioned him his share of accountability for this scandal. When something goes horribly wrong under the purview of leaders, the leaders should be held accountable, even though they may not be directly at fault.

This is something many Penn Staters have failed to understand. The family's complaints about witnesses and e-mails "do not erase the shocking and striking documents which Freeh did uncover and which form an unassailable finding made by Mr. Freeh that Joe Paterno tragically had knowledge in and again in that Jerry Sandusky was a threat, which was never dealt with properly by the former Penn State coach," said Thomas Kline, attorney for Victim No.

In an online letter to Penn State's current and former players, Paterno's widow, Sue, wrote on Friday: "The Freeh report failed and if it is not challenged and corrected, nothing worthwhile will have come from these tragic events. The university panicked after the Freeh report was released, she claimed, and Penn State's board of trustees should have challenged the report. Penn State review recasts story of football hero Paterno. She told the players that they -- and his family -- were Joe Paterno's legacy, not a report.

Freeh's extraordinary attack on Joe's character and integrity. I did not recognize the man Mr. Freeh described," she said. The university's board of trustees fired Paterno after a year career because, it said, his "decision to do his minimum legal duty and not to do more to follow up constituted a failure of leadership. The governing body of major college sports also vacated Penn State's football wins dating back to , the year when allegations that Sandusky was abusing children were first made.

That penalty removed Paterno from the top of the list of Division I college football's winningest coaches. Paterno died in January Sandusky, who ran a charity for disadvantaged children after he retired in , was convicted last June on 45 counts of child sex abuse. Paterno died Jan. Penn State head coach Joe Paterno watches over the beginning of practice Nov.

It would be his last practice. Paterno was fired later that day. Thanks for visiting PennLive. Quality local journalism has never been more important. We need your support. Not a subscriber yet? Please consider supporting our work.

His family has vehemently denied those allegations and they have not been tried in a court of law. Yet Penn State administrators probably feel they have no choice. Many of those boosters are strong Paterno supporters, because they became boosters at the urging of Paterno, because fundraising is one of the main jobs college football coaches have these days. Likewise former players have pushed for Paterno to be honored.

Appeasing them is important because they, too, encourage or make donations and also play a role in recruiting. Of course Paterno is still beloved by many fans, too, and they have tended to be the loudest constituency. And in a quiet town like State College, the intuition to listen only to those nearby who share similar feelings and viewpoints can be difficult to overcome — especially if doing the right thing means possibly dampening the fun on Saturdays or stemming the flow of revenue.
