A-level results day has been brought forward a little this year, with teenagers finding out their grades on Tuesday 10 August. With exams scrapped for the second year in succession due to the Covid pandemic grades will be e ntirely based on teacher assessments , with the controversial Ofqual algorithm scrapped. The service is frozen in the period leading up to results day , and will then update on Tuesday at around 8.
You can log in to the service using the welcome email you should have received from Ucas when you applied to university. However, the demand does mean that the system can become clogged up with students desperate to find out their status, so it might not happen instantly. The online service simply tells you whether your specific university applications have been successful.
And if things go better than you expected, and you fancy looking at what else is on offer, you can apply for the Ucas Adjustment service. The Ucas website will have an official list of what is available, so have a good look through and see what appeals before rushing into a decision.
When you have a shortlist together, give the universities a call — they will most likely give you an informal offer over the phone, and you can speak to a number of unis before making your choice.
In the final results, nearly 40 per cent of A-level results were downgraded from their teacher predictions, and the Government was ultimately forced to U-turn. While many universities will agree to this, if they don't, you could choose to withdraw your application for this year and then reapply when the process begins for the next student intake. If you managed to meet and exceed the conditions of your firm offer, and you're happy with that then that's great. However, if you'd like to explore the possibility of picking an alternative course requiring higher grades, you can do this through the UCAS Adjustment service.
Available for a week from A-level results day, you can look around for your ideal course, while you still have your original unconditional firm choice to fall back on.
To discuss course vacancies you're interested in, contact the university admissions office directly. Should you decide to change where and what you're studying, this needs to be registered in Track. You can only verbally agree on one course choice, which will then appear in Track. They may also offer an alternative start date, such as deferred entry. You have five days to decide and can discuss the opportunity with the university in question. Bear in mind that your A-level results won't appear in Track. Don't panic, as there are a number of options open to you.
Appeals can be made to Ofqual by schools and colleges in England on behalf of their students. Bear in mind that if you appeal, your grade can go up, down or stay the same.
